Lead Mechanic Supervisor – Scaffolding
Purpose:
Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Lead Mechanic Supervisor to oversee Stage Building and Scaffolding operations in Norfolk, VA.
Job Description: Manage, supervise, and direct the day-to-day efforts of department tradesmen assigned to the project.
Train lower-level mechanics and semi-skilled employees.
75-80% of the time will be spent aboard ship or in the shop supervising staff.
Ensure that all work completed on the vessel and in-house is on time, on budget, and to the contract quality standards.
Provide training to new employees covering shop equipment and procedures.
Maintain the right mix of skilled and semi-skilled employees working to keep the dollar cost as low as possible.
Provide ample notice of manpower needs and changes to the Shop Foreman.
Hold the employees accountable for the established goals and check their progress to those goals on a frequent basis.
Evaluate the necessity and progress of subcontractors and temporary employees.
Promote and confirm that all employees and subcontractors are in compliance with the safety requirements, to include the necessary use of PPE.
Assist in determining project physical progress and project cost projections.
Maintain the vessel, shops, and surrounding areas in a clean and safe condition.
Identify and document any potential growth work, not only growth that is needed to complete the job assigned, but also in areas of the ship where there is no agreed work currently.
Become familiar with all work-related documents such as drawings, manuals and question requirements that are not clear or appear to be in conflict.
Identify improvements that can be made in yard work process.
Will be required to wear personal protective equipment-hardhat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, a respirator.
Work independently to complete responsibilities.
Must have regular, reliable attendance.
Other duties may be assigned as work load requirements dictate.
Qualifications: Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least (5) five years shipboard experience within the trade to be supervised.
Must have knowledge of OSHA 1915 for Shipyard and OSHA 1926 for Commercial Vessels.
Must have previous supervisory experience.
Must have expert knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade.
Must be able to work effectively with others.
Must be a steady, reliable worker.
Must be able to comprehend and follow complex instructions.
Must be self-motivated and able to complete responsibilities with minimal direction.
Must have regular, reliable attendance.
Travel Requirements: Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes.
The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships.
Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
May ride ships at sea for extended periods Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear.
Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
Work in extreme temperatures and conditions.
At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation Frequent use of respirator.
Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
