gov Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Duties This position is located at the District Equipment Shop in Suffolk, Virginia.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is seeking an Equipment Repair Technician to diagnose, repair, inspect and maintain motorized and mechanical equipment related to construction, highway maintenance, grounds, and automotive equipment of all types and in varied locations.
The Core Responsibilities of the position include: Perform safety inspections under the guidelines of the Virginia State Police Inspection program for vehicles and equipment.
Diagnose vehicle, equipment or asset failures using electronic testing equipment, service and equipment repair manuals and on-line resources.
Recommend outsourcing for major repairs when needed.
Prepare, process, and maintain required maintenance and repair documentation.
Generate, complete and close-out work orders in computer system.
Perform time and leave entry.
Prepare parts requests.
Complete paperwork for warranty inspections and repairs.
Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment or assets according to PM schedule and guidelines.
Make repairs as needed when deficiencies are found or recommend outsourcing.
Prepare equipment for emergency operations.
Make equipment repairs to reduce downtime during emergency operations to include on-the-road repairs.
Design, fabricate, modify, and weld components to repair, rebuild, or replace parts.
Perform repairs and overhauls to all types of automobiles, equipment and tools to include engines, transmissions, driveline components, electrical and computer systems, fuel injection systems, air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic components and air brakes.
Required skills for job & position: Ability to operate various types of light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
Knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication operations.
Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to read, write, and perform basic math calculations.
Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.
Knowledge of general shop procedures.
Ability to read and comprehend service and repair manuals, gauges and testing devices.
Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.
Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
Skill in the use of hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
Ability to coach and instruct others in diagnostic and repair techniques and in the operation of equipment.
VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position may be designated to support emergency operations during certain situations.
As such, you may occasionally be required to work an assignment that includes hours outside the normal work schedule including weekends and holidays.
Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.

Skill in the use of computers, hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair, maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.
Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
Ability to obtain Refrigerant Recovery & Recycling Certification within 12 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Additional Considerations A combination of training, experience, or education in Automotive Repair, Maintenance or related field desired.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
Experience using cutting and welding equipment.
Virginia State Inspection License - Class A Experience repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive and construction equipment.

Valid driver’s license and CDL required.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date.
You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification.
Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement.
The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training.
VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
